Herkulu Tea Estate

meet the farmers

The black tea in our Zanzibar chai blend is grown in the Usambara Mountains at the Herkulu Estate in north-east Tanzania. This region has been a pioneer in organic tea farming for decades.

The estate spans 230 hectares of tea bushes and is surrounded by one of the last remaining areas of virgin rainforest in Tanzania. It also works closely with local smallholder farmers, whose tea is carefully processed at the estate’s factory to ensure consistent quality and flavour.

The tea is grown at an elevation of 1500 metres above sea level, giving it a distinct flavour profile characteristic of high-altitude teas, rich, smooth and full of depth.

The estate maintains its own cattle herd and uses composted organic matter to naturally fertilise the tea plants, supporting a sustainable and regenerative farming system.

We are proud to use this tea in our Zanzibar chai blend, as its values closely align with Ujamaa. The estate supports local communities by paying fair wages and reinvesting through Fairtrade premiums into projects such as roofing, maize mills and school buildings.

Not only is this tea produced with care and integrity, it also delivers exceptional flavour in every cup.
