Description
This nutmeg is harvested from ancient nutmeg trees that are scattered throughout the village, while they also provide much needed shade for the villagers.
When the fruits are cracked open, they expose the bright red coloured mace wrapped around the outer shell of the nutmeg. They are dried in the sun until you can hear a rattling sound when you shake them.
How to open a nutmeg:
Since many of you might not have experienced fresh nutmeg, make sure to keep precious the mace (the red structure wrapped around the nut) to use in all sort of delicacies.
To reach the actual nutmeg, give the outer shell a good (but gentle) crack with either your hand or an object (e.g. a spoon). This will reveal the inner nutmeg which you can then use to grate over your food.
Freshly grate some of this Mitakawani nutmeg over your mashed potatoes, cheesy cauliflower or grilled meat. In the meantime, infuse the red mace into your favourite dessert or pudding to round off the meal. It is truly one of the most versatile spices and one of our firm favourites.
