Zanzibar Yellow Cardamom

Description

Aromatic with a gentle herbal warmth, this Zanzibar cardamom is a single origin spice grown organically by our partner smallholder farmers and carefully sun-dried in the Zanzibari climate to preserve its natural flavour.

Zanzibar Yellow Cardamom from Mitakawani Village

This Zanzibar yellow cardamom may not have the bright green colour you’re used to, but that is completely natural. Grown organically in Mitakawani village, each pod develops small marks on its outer shell over time, a sign of its natural growth without chemical intervention.

The cardamom is harvested when fully ripe and then traditionally sun-dried, a process used for generations. Unlike commercially processed cardamom, no artificial drying methods or chemicals are used to preserve colour. Instead, the pods naturally turn a straw-yellow shade due to the tropical climate and sun-drying process.

This sustainable method avoids the need for energy-intensive drying systems and supports environmentally conscious farming practices.

In Zanzibar, cardamom is widely used to flavour milk, both dairy and plant-based such as coconut milk. Simply crush a few pods and simmer them in milk to release a sweet, floral aroma. It is also perfect for baking, especially in Scandinavian pastries, and can add depth to savoury dishes.

The complex flavour notes of this product include:
Floral - Mint - Fresh Straw

  1. Very prompt delivery. Having smelled them at a friends, decided that they were perfect Christmas Gifts and a way of supporting people in the Global South who are more vulnerable to the global heating we in the West with are causing.

  2. Amazing quality. I’ve never seen cardamom pods like these before.
