Includes the following:
KIBENI WOMEN COOPERATIVE TURMERIC
Grown in the small village of Kibeni at the Northern tip of the island of Unguja, this turmeric is grown by an inspiring group of women on small plots of land near their homes. This vibrantly coloured turmeric is super concentrated and packed with flavour.
MITAKAWANI VILLAGE GINGER
In the middle of the Southern island of Unguja lies the small village of Mitakawani, far removed from any tourism and completely reliant on spice farming. This ginger is grown by women on small plots of land. After harvesting, it is dried in the sun and then pounded to a powder in a rhythmic motion using a traditional wooden mortar.
KIDICHI COOPERATIVE CLOVES
Grown in what once were the private spice gardens of the first Sultan, the land is now divided between smallhold farmers. These clove trees are considered by many to be the best in the world! The cloves are picked right before flowering to maximise flavour and precious oil content, then dried in the tropical Zanzibari sun.
MITAKAWANI VILLAGE CARDAMOM
In the middle of the Southern island of Unguja lies the small village of Mitakawani, far removed from any tourism and completely reliant on spice farming. This organically grown cardamom may not be the bright green colour you’re used to, but what it lacks in colour, it makes up for in flavour!
KIDICHI COOPERATIVE CINNAMON POWDER
Grown in what once were the private spice gardens of the first Sultan, the land is now divided between smallhold farmers. The farmers take great care in selecting and removing the outer bark from the most fragrant trees, after which the inner bark is carefully peeled off and dried in the Zanzibari sun.
KIDICHI COOPERATIVE BLACK PEPPER
Grown in what once were the private spice gardens of the first Sultan, the land is now divided between smallhold farmers. This black pepper is ripened on the vine until the first fruits turn orange, then harvested by hand and sun-dried. This pepper really embodies the forest it grows in – no monoculture here!
MITAKAWANI VILLAGE NUTMEG
In the middle of the Southern island of Unguja lies the small village of Mitakawani, far removed from any tourism and completely reliant on spice farming. This nutmeg is harvested from ancient nutmeg trees that are scattered throughout the village, while they also provide much needed shade for the villagers.
