Zanzibar Ginger

£6.50

Description

Our award winning Zanzibar ginger: bold and spicy, this single origin ginger is grown completely organically by our partner small-hold women farmers in the Mitakawani village.

See what the great taste award jury had to say:

‘You would never eat ginger as a dry spice, but this is exceptional – it tastes as if that Tanzanian women’s collective pounded it just yesterday and let it dry in the sun. Seriously, it has extraordinary freshness for a dried spice.’

‘There was a fantastic aroma on the nose of ginger.. We loved the texture, which was not too finely milled. the ginger was fresh and clean.’

‘The first impression of this product is of a strong citrus smell, but ginger follows soon thereafter. It’s fiery and well powdered. We remembered older generations shaking ginger powder over melon, as a starter. This is a full-bodied product and a delight. To capture ginger in a dried product is some achievement’

Zanzibar Ginger from Mitakawani Village

This Zanzibar ginger is grown primarily by women farmers in Mitakawani village, on small plots of land nestled among fruit trees such as bananas and yams. After harvesting, the ginger is carefully sun-dried and traditionally hand-pounded into a powder using wooden mortars, then sieved to ensure a fine, high-quality texture.

The hot, dry climate of the region gives this ginger its distinctive character, bold, spicy and highly concentrated in flavour.

Perfect for marinades, curries and baking, it can also be steeped in hot water to create a warming ginger tea. Whether used in savoury dishes or sweet treats like gingerbread, this versatile spice adds depth and heat to every recipe.

The complex flavour notes of this product include:
Fiery - Lemon Peel - Camphor

Zanzibar Ginger?
Our village cooperative in
Mitakawani, Zanzibar
In the heart of Unguja, the southern island of Zanzibar, lies the village of Mitakawani. Far removed from tourist hotspots, the community relies almost entirely on spice farming for its livelihood. With most farmers working small plots of land, harvests are often combined and sold collectively, allowing the community to share resources and profits.Zanzibar Ginger from Mitakawani VillageOur award-winning Zanzibar ginger is bold, spicy and full of character. This single origin ginger is grown organically by our partner smallholder women farmers in Mitakawani village, then traditionally processed to preserve its natural intensity and freshness.Shaped by the hot, dry climate, this ginger delivers a vibrant, concentrated flavour that stands out in both sweet and savoury dishes.See what the Great Taste Award judges had to say:“Of course the provenance of this spice is interesting, but it doesn’t actually affect whether or not the taste is good. This spice is good, it’s hot, it’s bright, it’s ginger at its liveliest. It tastes as if it was pounded just yesterday and dried in the sun. It has extraordinary freshness for a dried spice.”“There was a fantastic aroma on the nose of ginger. We loved the texture, which was not too finely milled. The ginger was fresh and clean.”“The first impression is of a strong citrus aroma, followed by ginger. It’s fiery and well balanced. A full-bodied product and a delight. Capturing this level of freshness in a dried spice is an achievement.”
